This group of German prisoners are probably cursing their comrades’ efficiency as they shelter from artillery fire behind the tank destroyer, Cynthia Queen.

During the early months of the year thick mud restricted movement off the road but as soon as the weather improved in April, the Allies were able to deploy their superior numbers of tanks and half-tracks anywhere. This group of Shermans are firing indirectly in support of an infantry attack.

As the months passed Allied tank design improved, in an attempt to match the larger and heavier German models. Even so crews were allowed to use their own initiative to improve their machines by gathering useful equipment and making field modifications. The original profile of this tank destroyer is lost under a pile of sandbags, spares and personal equipment; the forked prongs were useful for carving a way through embankments and hedges.
